Lets take a ride, and run with the dogs tonight in Suburbia

I made this map for the publication Buitenwijk (1998) van Arnold Reijndorp c.s. Reijndorp shows that inhabitants of suburbia use a vast amount of the area surrounding them, and the map illustrates this concept with a real world example. It shows the small suburb 'Toolenburg' nearby Hoofddorp and its surrounds. If you ask the Toolenburg suburbanites,, they will confirm that they are in fact right in the middle of everything. They can choose the sea that surrounds them, the shopping in Amsterdam, the leisure of the Green Heart, or the beaches of The Hague, Scheveningen or Noordwijk. Suburbanites are smart and own a car, often two.

The second map shows the same region, but with symbols plotted on the spots where the Toolenburg suburbanites actually shop, sail, swim, work, take planes, go to the theater or have fun. The title of this article is derived from the Pet Shop Boys song Suburbia, the full lyrics of which can be found here.
